The first generation of enterprise AI was a text box. You typed, it answered, and nothing in your infrastructure changed. That was a demo, not an operation.
The interface that matters for real work is not a conversation. It is a control plane: a place where intent is declared, action is governed, and every step is accountable. The chat box is one input into that plane, not the plane itself.
Why the surface has to change
A model that can only talk is safe because it is inert. The moment it can act, the interface has to carry governance with it: identity, scope, a deny-list floor, an audit trail. Those are not features bolted onto a chat window. They are the shape of the surface.
The console is the interface
For a team running agents as a workforce, the primary surface is the operating view: every agent, every ticket, every gate and handoff in real time. Conversation is how you brief an agent. The console is how you run the fleet.
